Bluesky says Australian politics fractured by climate court win and rising authoritarianism fears as election pressures mount.

The High Court’s landmark ruling that New South Wales must account for exported coal’s climate impact has delivered a rare win for environmental advocates, but the decision exposed the Albanese government’s contradictory stance on fossil fuels and climate action. Meanwhile, escalating concerns over police militarisation—particularly NSW’s new Armed Response Command armed with long-guns—and criticism of Labor’s performance on aged care, housing, and the NDIS dominated social media discourse, with many posts questioning whether the government has abandoned its core constituency.

Key Issues: Climate policy tension dominated discussion, with Labor caught between approving major coal and gas projects while facing international climate commitments at pre-COP talks in Fiji. The cost-of-living crisis continued to fuel debate over grocery prices and housing affordability, with the Greens launching a campaign promising state-owned supermarkets and price caps on essentials. Police militarisation emerged as a civil liberties flashpoint, with users expressing alarm at NSW’s paramilitary-style unit and drawing comparisons to authoritarian policing models.

A post from Newcastle emphasising “housing is a human right” garnered significant engagement, while user sentiment across the platform reflected deepening frustration with all major parties. Lucy Hamilton’s exposure of One Nation’s campaign materials as near-verbatim copies of Netanyahu advertisements, combined with widespread criticism of Albanese’s leadership, underscored a pervasive sense that Australian politics has lost its moorings.

SAP Australia Adds Home Affairs Cloud and Support Contracts

SAP Australia Pty Ltd won three contracts from the Department of Home Affairs worth about $6.5 million combined, covering cloud services and premium support.

SAP Australia is the local arm of the German enterprise software company. It says it has supported the Australian Government since 1988 and has about 1,400 staff in Australia. It also says it works with a partner ecosystem of more than 625 firms, half of them small businesses. A third-party profile credits the company with about $3.36 billion in government contracts across 1,304 engagements. Its product range includes S/4HANA ERP, SuccessFactors, Ariba and Analytics Cloud. Public-sector customers named by SAP include ANSTO and Fire & Rescue NSW.

In May 2024 the Digital Transformation Agency signed a new Whole of Government arrangement with SAP Australia. It was reported as worth $152 million over an initial three years, and it continues software services for agencies already running SAP ERP systems. SAP has said it will end mainstream support for its ERP Central Component product on 31 December 2027. That deadline is pushing customers toward cloud migration.

On the support side, SAP says its cloud subscriptions include baseline support. Customers can buy upgraded success plans that add premium expert services and faster initial response times through a premium service level agreement and designated support.
