Bluesky says Labor dominates #auspol discourse as government faces criticism over Israel response and gambling reforms.

BlueSky #auspol  ·  21 August 2026, 05:29 AEST  ·  651 posts  ·  AI-generated

The past 24 hours on #auspol has centred on Foreign Minister Penny Wong’s escalating language regarding Israel’s decision not to prosecute soldiers involved in the death of Australian aid worker Zomi Frankcom. Wong moved from “deeply concerned” to “outraged,” yet the government faces sustained criticism for declining to expel the Israeli ambassador or impose sanctions. Simultaneously, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese defended his government’s gambling advertising reforms as “serious reform” despite widespread rejection from advocates who say the legislation lacks teeth.

Key Issues dominating discussion include the Zomi Frankcom case, with calls intensifying for ambassador expulsion and trade sanctions as the government’s rhetorical gestures draw accusations of performative outrage; the gambling reforms, where 79 per cent public support for a full ban contrasts sharply with what critics characterise as watered-down legislation protecting wagering industry interests; and aged care, where algorithmic rationing decisions are being challenged—with nearly one in five appeals resulting in increased support, highlighting gaps between government policy and human need.

The tone across the network reflects deep frustration with Labor’s centrist positioning. While some posts commend incremental wins—the continuation of the CHSP program, disability support advocacy, and construction sector scrutiny—dominant sentiment expresses disillusionment. Recurring criticism frames the Albanese government as captured by corporate interests and complicit with Israeli policy through inaction, with several posts suggesting voters have abandoned Labor for the Greens or independents. Simon Rosenberg’s widely-circulated post crystallised the mood: “When Albanese said no-one left behind, he meant corporate lobby groups.”

UNSW Wins $15.6m Contract to Scale National Hepatitis C Testing Program

The University of New South Wales has secured a three-year, $15.6 million contract to expand the National Hepatitis C Point-of-Care Testing Program across Australia. The work will be delivered through the Kirby Institute, UNSW's medical research organisation that specialises in infectious diseases including HIV, viral hepatitis and sexually transmitted infections. Founded in 1986, the Kirby Institute employs approximately 350 staff and operates with an annual budget of around $39 million.

Point-of-care testing enables hepatitis C diagnosis and treatment initiation in a single clinic visit, using rapid antibody tests that deliver results in one to five minutes and RNA tests that detect active infection within an hour. Traditional laboratory-based testing requires multiple visits, leading to high rates of patients lost to follow-up. The Australian program, which began testing its first participant in January 2022, operates across more than 90 sites including drug treatment clinics, needle and syringe programs, prisons, homelessness services and Aboriginal community-controlled health organisations.

Australia is estimated to have more than 74,000 people living with hepatitis C, despite therapies that cure over 95 percent of cases. The contract was awarded through a limited tender on technical grounds, reflecting UNSW's established role co-leading the national program with Flinders University's International Centre for Point-of-Care Testing since receiving Commonwealth Department of Health funding to establish the network.
