The date when a Federal election is called sits firmly in the hands of the Prime Minister.
Right now the last day it can reasonably be held is 21 May 2022 (technically it could be later but that would mean breaking a long-held convention and running the Senate election separately to the Reps - which is unlikely to be a popular move).
Most pundits think there's every chance the election will be held earlier. But right now the timer shows what is in effect the maximum time anyone thinking of contesting the election has to prepare.
We will update the timer as soon as there are any announcements.
